The Republic has recently legalized a multiparty political system.
Along with the major party which is the PDG (Democratic Party of Gabon),
other political parties have sprouted up since the National Conference
in 1990. The Republic is democratic with full adult suffrage.
On March 21, 1997, the government brought to parliament legislation
aimed at reforming the constitution in a number of key areas : notably,
the bill mandated the creation of a Vice President of the republic,
the extension of the presidential term of office from five to seven
years, and the transformation of the senate into an upper chamber
of Parliament.
The President of the Republic and Head of State is henceforth elected
by direct universal suffrage for a period of seven years and will
be eligible for a re-election. For the last 28 years, El Hadj Omar
BONGO ONDIMBA has been the ruling president. He holds supreme executive
power and appoints the Prime Minister who in turn forms the government.
Legislative power is exercised by the National Assembly. Laws are
adopted after being passed by Parliament, which consists of 120 members,
and after being approved by the President. The elected parliament
remains in power for a period of up to five years before a general
election is held. |
