The President of Gabon
His Excellency EL Hadj Omar BONGO ONDIMBA
President Omar BONGO ONDIMBA was born on Monday, 30 December 1935.

In 1958, upon completion of competitive examinations, he entered into the service of the Postal Administration.

On 27 October, he took his discharge from the Army with the French rank of Lieutenant.

After a period spent as an official in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he was nominated Director in March 1962 of the Assistant Cabinet of the President of the Republic and, seven months later, he became Director of the Cabinet. From that time he was associated with governmental affairs, becoming the right-hand man of President Léon MBA.

He entered Government on 25 September 1965 as Minister of State to the Presidency of the Republic, responsible for National Defence and Coordination.
From August 1966, he was responsible for Information and Tourism.

He succeeded the late President, in accordance with constitutional provisions.

On 25 February 1973, OMAR BONGO ONDIMBA was re-elected President of the Republic.

In July 1977, EL HADJ OMAR BONGO ONDIMBA was elected current CHAIRMAN of the OAU.

On 30 December 1980, the Gabonese people once again renewed their confidence in him.

EL HADJ OMAR BONGO ONDIMBA was re-elected by universal suffrage on 9 November 1986.

In January 1990, President BONGO ONDIMBA, as Secretary General of the Gabonese Democratic Party, accepted the proposal made to him by the Central Committee which handed him a report one month later concerning the liberalization of national political life.

On 14 March 1990, President BONGO ONDIMBA announced his decision to convenue a National Conference which resulted in the installation of a multiparty system.

On 5 December 1993, he was elected Presidient of the Republic after the first multiparty presidential election.

EL HADJ OMAR BONGO ONDIMBA married Miss Edith Lucie NGUESSO, daughter of the current President of the Republic of the Congo, on 4 August 1990. This is the President’s second Marriage.
